The aim of Bachelor of science in Nursing is to prepare competent graduate nurses with qualities to enable them function effectively in provision of quality health services to the individual, family and the community. Egerton university school of nursing also prepares students who are actively involved in research and nursing education in a dynamic society.

Nursing/Midwifery Course in Detail

The objective of this program is designed to:-

  1. Equip the students with skills necessary to identify the health needs of a population and execute the necessary interventions.
  2. Prepare the students to undertake the management of patients and clients in diverse health care settings using the Nursing Process.

iii. Equip students with skills in design, development and implementation of training curriculum.

  1. Train students in the process of managing, monitoring and evaluation of health programmes.
  2. Enable the students to describe the process of designing, implementation, utilization and critique of research.
  3. Enable students to acquire skills in critical thinking for problem solving and decision making.

vii. Train the student in skills required for participation in inter-sectoral, multi-disciplinary and collaborative teams in the provision of healthcare.

viii. Equip students with knowledge and skills in the concepts and principles of teaching and learning as it applies to individuals, families and communities in nurse training institution and/or in health care setting

  1. Prepare the student with skills to discuss the emerging concepts, principles and theories in nursing and healthcare.

Learning Outcomes

Upon completion of the prescribed course of the study for Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the graduates will have acquired knowledge and skills to be able to:

  1. Assess and appropriately recognize the health needs of a population and plan for the necessary interventions
  2. Demonstrate knowledge and competence in the management of patients and clients in diverse health care settings using the nursing process

iii. Participate in the design, development and implementation of training curricula

  1. Manage, monitor and evaluate programmes.
  2. Participate in the design, implementation, utilization and critique of research
  3. Apply critical thinking skills for problem solving and decision making

vii. Participate in inter-sectoral, multi-disciplinary and collaborative teams in the provision of healthcare.

viii. Apply concepts and principles of teaching and learning to individuals, families and communities in nurse training institution and/or in health care setting

  1. Apply the emerging concepts, principles and theories in nursing and healthcare

Admission Requirements

Candidates wishing to study for the Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing shall have met the minimum University entry requirements as stipulated in the Egerton University Statutes.

In addition they should meet the following Faculty requirements;

i). Alternative A

  1. a) Biology C+ (Plus)
  2. b) Chemistry C+ (Plus)
  3. c) Mathematics or Physics C+ (Plus)
  4. d) English or Kiswahili C+ (Plus)

iii) Alternative B

  1. a) A minimum of two principal passes in Biology and Chemistry and
  2. b) Subsidiary passes in either Mathematics or Physics.

iii). Alternative C (for In-service students only)

  1. a) Must have a minimum grade of C or Division III for KCSE Examination or I Principal and Subsidiary for A Level Examination.
  2. b) Should be holders of the following:
  3. Kenya Registered Nursing/Midwifery/Public Health Diploma. (KRN/M/PH) OR
  4. Kenya Registered Nursing/Midwifery Diploma. (KRN/M/) OR
  5. Kenya Registered Nursing Diploma (KRN) OR
  6. Kenya Registered Community Health Nursing Diploma (KRCHN) OR
  7. Equivalent qualifications assessed by the Faculty and approved by the Senate and Nursing council of Kenya.
  8. Must be registered with the Nursing Council of Kenya or other institutions recognized by the Nursing Council of Kenya.

Course Structure and Duration of Study

Program Duration

  1. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing shall extend over a period of 180 weeks divided into 4 academic years with a total of 221.5 CFs
  2. The Bachelor of Science in Nursing In service shall extend over a period of 120 weeks divided into two and half academic years with a total of 160.0 CFs

iii. The academic year in the Bachelor of Science Nursing program Sciences shall be divided into three terms. Each term shall comprise 15 weeks.

  1. A maximum forty percent (40%) credit transfer of the Senate approved credit factors towards the requirements for the degree program will be accepted, provided the candidate had obtained a credit or above in the specific relevant course.

Program Administration

  1. i) The program will be offered in courses.
  2. ii) The university unit system of study will apply as follows:
  3. a) 1 Credit Factor is equivalent to 15 hours of classroom teaching per term
  4. b) 1 Credit Factor is equivalent to 30 practical/ tutorial hours per term
  5. c) 1 Credit Factor is equivalent to 45 clinical hours per term.

Course Coding

The course code for Bachelor of Science in Nursing will be NURS

  1. The first numeral represents the year of study
  2. The second numeral represents broad course category, i.e.

NURS= Nursing

0 = Introduction to nursing courses

1 = Medical-surgical nursing courses

2 = Reproductive health courses

3 = Child health nursing courses

4 = Community health nursing courses

5 = Psychiatric Nursing

6= Surgical discipline courses

Examination

Modes of Examinations

The examinations shall take the following formats as indicated in the examination schedule:

  1. Written examination
  2. Viva voce (oral) examination

iii. Practical examination

  1. Clinical examination

Rules and Regulations

All the University regulations shall apply for the Bachelor of Science in Nursing. In addition, the following rules shall apply:-

  1. The end of year examination shall include theory paper comprising 70% and continuous assessment tests (CATS) 30%. Except for clinical subjects whose proportion will be 60% theory and 40% for exams and CATS respectively.
  2. Clinical examination will be marked out of 100%. Any candidate who fails the practical examination will have failed to satisfy the examiners in the overall discipline even if the final mark is 50% or higher.

iii. The pass mark for the courses will be 50% except for University common courses whose pass mark will depend on the Faculty under which these courses fall.

166.6. Grading System

The total marks scored for each course shall be translated into letter grades as follows:

75% and above – A (Distinction)

65 – 74% – B (Credit)

50 – 64% – C (Pass)

Less than50% – D (Fail)

Graduation Requirements

To graduate a student shall be required to take and pass ALL scheduled courses within the stipulated period.

Degree Classification

The Bachelor‘s degree in Nursing shall not be classified.
